America: A 20 Year Journey with No Particular Destination

150 Plates

A portrait of America.

Embarking on a 20-year odyssey across America, my photographic journey transcends the mere act of travel—it becomes a pilgrimage, a homage to the luminaries who paved the way before me. Inspired by the likes of Robert Frank, Ed Ruscha, and William Eggleston, I sought to capture the essence of the American open road, where nostalgia intertwines with the pulse of modernity.

With each mile traversed, I found myself drawn to the remnants of a bygone era—diners, motels, and gas stations standing as weathered sentinels of time's passage. These forgotten landscapes, once bustling with life, now echo with the whispers of solitude, their stories etched into the very fabric of forgotten highways.

Yet, amidst decay and desolation, my lens found solace in the faces of those who inhabit this transient world—drifters, the homeless, and the nomadic souls who call the road their home. Their haunted gazes spoke of a nation in flux, teetering on the brink of transformation.

These images serve not merely as documentation, but as mirrors reflecting my own internal quest—a search for belonging amidst the nomadic rhythm of life on the road. They weave a tapestry of longing, lamenting the loss of a world that once thrived, while yearning for a sense of connection that transcends the fleeting nature of the journey.

In "A 20 Year Road Trip With No Destination: America," viewers are invited to join me on a visual exploration of America's roadside—a meditation on beauty, decay, and the ever-present specter of change. Through these photographs, I aim to evoke a shared sense of nostalgia for a vanishing era, while igniting contemplation on the enduring allure of the road trip—a timeless symbol of wanderlust, discovery, and the eternal search for home.

A soundscape made up from stereo field recordings, voice interviews with people on the streets in America. Crazed and drowned out by the passing traffic.
