Hotel Room

My day is devoted to working as a cinematographer shooting documentaries for others and at the end of the day, I return to my hotel room. It’s not just a room, it’s my sanctuary, my stage and a place where I get to be self-expressive.

For the last thirty years I have been spending around eight to ten months per year in a hotel rooms, working away at the following five photographic projects, a 22 minute film and an audio soundscape.

These theatrical still lives and staged self-portraits have a confessional quality and reveal my internal world.

The images are photographed using various 120 medium format film cameras (Mamiya RZ, Mamiya 7 II, Makina Plaubel 67 and Pentax 67 II). The 22 minute film was photographed using a Red Gemini with Angenieux lenses and framed in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The audio equipment used was a Sony D100 and a Zoom H4 Hand held stereo field recorder.
